Indoor Split Systems

Furnaces

The most common way to heat a home in the Northwest is a furnace system with ducts. Some of the most common types of furnaces are fueled by gas, propane, oil, wood, biomass, or electricity. A furnace pushes the heated air through ductwork, which is then distributed throughout a building. The heating ability for furnaces is measured using the Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) percentage. A higher AFUE percent results in a more efficient furnace.

Air Handlers

Air Handlers are electric furnaces that have indoor coils attached to them in order to provide cooling. This cooling comes from either an Air Conditioner or Heat Pump. Air Handlers can be single or variable speed units. A single-speed blower will always blow at the same speed. A variable-speed blower will adjust the motor speed to the demand.

Outdoor Split Systems

Air Conditioner

Air Conditioners are typically outdoor units attached via a line set(refrigerant line) to an indoor unit. These indoor units can be either a furnace or air handler. They transfer heat from inside a building to the exterior using the line set. An Air Conditioner is rated with a Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER). This measures how much cooling a system can put out with each unit of energy it consumes. The higher the rating, the more efficient the air conditioner is.

Heat Pumps

Heat Pumps look and act similar to the Air Conditioner. They are connected to an indoor unit via a line set. They provide cooling during the warmer months of the year. So they receive a SEER rating. The largest difference is it can reverse what an air conditioner does and pull heat from the exterior of the building, to heat it. Heat Pumps also receive a Heating Seasonal Performance Factor (HSPF) Rating. The higher both of these ratings, the more efficient the Heat Pump.

Other Heating and Cooling Systems

Ductless

Ductless systems are units that have no ducts attached to them. They have an indoor and outdoor unit that can provide heating and cooling. Ductless systems are either Air Conditioners or Heat Pumps. They are less intrusive because they don’t have any ductwork. They work great in older homes where ductwork doesn’t fit, new additions, or supplement heating and cooling.

Package Unit

In normal residential systems, HVAC contractors use a split system. This means there are two separate units, one inside and the other outside. A Package Unit is self-containing unit that holds both portions in the outdoor unit. Ductwork then supplies heating and cooling for the entire building. Commercial buildings commonly use these systems.

Indoor Air Quality

New homes and buildings are constructed tighter today than they have ever been in the past. This is done to help conserve energy and reduce heating and cooling cost. Recent studies have shown that indoor air quality can be poor because not enough fresh air enters a system or inadequate filtration systems don’t proper clean the air.

Home Energy Group, Inc. strives for all of its customers to be comfortable. Indoor Air Quality is part of that comfort. Using fresh air systems, better filtration systems, humidifiers and advanced thermostats, Home Energy Group, Inc. can provide clean indoor air for families to thrive.
